From the outset the Covid-19 pandemic offered new digital and commercial opportunities to physical businesses to become e-commerce enterprises, to boost or maintain their sales during the world’s various lockdowns. Work from home orders required a dramatic and seismic shift in thinking, with many organisations achieving the ability to continue to operate through apps and e-commerce websites. Revenues for established big e-commerce brands, such as Amazon, also increased significantly.

Statista says the UK is one of the most advanced e-commerce markets in Europe. Before the crisis, the UK’s Office of National Statistics (ONS) reported the country’s e-commerce revenue equated to £693bn (USD)

With Stay-At-Home and Work-from-Home orders, due to the various lockdowns, e-commerce accelerated in March 2020, as online shopping behaviours changed. Statista researcher, D. Tighe, found in his report, ‘Changes in online buying among UK consumers since COVID-19 2020-2021’ that 40% of shoppers said they had shopped more online, compared to before the pandemic. “By February 2021, however, this percentage had grown to approximately 75 percent. Similarly, offline shopping has decreased over the analysed period,” he writes...

Daniela Coppola writes in her ‘E-commerce worldwide - statistics & facts’ report for Statista of 23rd February 2022 that e-commerce has therefore “become an indispensable part of the global retail framework.”

Retail has seen a significant industrial transformation since the mid-1990s with the advent of the internet, and since then the industry has continued become increasingly digitalised in line with modern life, whereby most worldwide consumer transactions are completed either online or by using digital forms of payments at the expense of cash.

Coppola reveals: “The number of digital buyers keeps climbing every year. In 2020, over two billion people purchased goods or services online, and during the same year, e-retail sales surpassed 4.2 trillion U.S. dollars worldwide.” This upward trend is expected to continue unabated, with e-commerce forecast to reach 24.5% market share of total global retail sales by 2025.

Bango (AIM: BGO, OTCQX: BGOPF) – a company that is listed on the London Stock Exchange, and a provider of unique purchase behaviour technology – says the market is growing at a rate of at least 15% per year, and so the overall macro trend is that people are spending more money online. From a market perspective, many sectors have seen market growth. A key area is the packaging of content in the form of subscriptions, such as gaming. “Where people might have once bought games on a case by case basis, they are now paying for subscriptions e.g. Xbox Game Pass,” says Anil Malhotra, CMO and Co-Founder of Bango.

World’s Biggest Economy Poses EV Challenge

Most of the world’s top carmakers now want to make electric vehicles (EVs) the mode of transport to choose. The Washington Times reported that a race has begun for EV dominance and the newspaper suggests that this trend could firmly put China in the driving seat because the country is the world’s largest car market.

Peter Morici, an economist and business professor at the University of Maryland claims the Chinese have also created “savvy government policies”. So with Trump repealing Obama-era legislation such as the $7,500 (£6,352) tax credit, which helped to stoke up consumer demand for electric vehicles, it’s widely thought that the advantage goes to China.

Speaking about the repeal of the tax credit by the Trump administration in the US, Sahand Malek, Strategy consultant, Ptolemus Consulting Group. Comments: “For consumers to consider switching from traditional powered engines to all-electric and plug-in hybrid car, the US federal income tax credit is a great motivation.” However, the oil industry’s lobby is quite strong in the US and, to a certain extent, it views electrification as a threat to its existence. After all, the key focus of any support is EVs on the reduction of harmful emissions from diesel and petrol engines...

Plain speaking challenges for HMI

Chris Schreiner, director of UK innovation practice at Strategy Analytics says speech recognition use has increased from 2016 to 2017. However, the technology saw a slight dip between 2015 and 2016 despite in-vehicle speech recognition systems improving over the past few years. There is, for example, better communication available about the systems’ functions and about which voice commands that enable them to operate. He, therefore, thinks that the move towards voice assistants, as offered by BMW and Nuance’s human voice interface (HMI) system, represents a great step forward. Yet, the proclaimed advancements haven’t quite kept up with rising consumer expectations.

Risks May Differ But Don’t Go Away for Driverless Insurance

Challenges for insurers devising policy plans for ADAS and autonomous explored by Graham Jarvis.

By reputation the insurance industry is often seen as a slow-moving beast but research suggests that their pace is changing. It seems that insurers are keenly embracing new technologies, such as advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), and they are taking steps to prepare themselves for an autonomous vehicle future. Nevertheless, there is still the feeling that the rapid advances in autonomous vehicle technologies have taken some industries by surprise, including insurers, because there will be a need to create some radically different parameters from the very well established insurance model.

Legislators around the world are having to address the changes the rapid advances in autonomous vehicle technologies are creating. This includes finding a legislative way to answer the liability question of who’s responsible when an accident occurs when the traditional human driver is no longer in control of the car.

5G Could Replay VHS v Betamax Battle with Connected Cars

Choosing the IoT tech to create smarter cars and cities to improve mobility, explored by Graham Jarvis.

Frost and Sullivan has found that “autonomous cars [alone] will account for a $84Bn (£67Bn) market by 2030”. The claim was recently made in one of the company’s press releases by its mobility partner Franck Leveque. Of this market value the company says half will emanate from software related activities as a result of the convergence of the mobility sector with other industries. With the digital transformation of the automotive industry under way the firm expects to see the growth of mobility-as-a-service (MaaS), created by ride-hailing apps and car-pooling apps. Together these mobile applications already have a combined total of 110M users.

With the global market for digital mobility services forecast to grow to $2Trn by 2025, Frost and Sullivan suggests there is much continued private sector interest in digital mobility services and, as result of this trend, the firm says there is a readiness to combine different modes of transport to the extent that the “lines between private and public transport are becoming blurred in favour of a multi-modal integrated transportation systems”.
